News Bulletin No.4 July 2000

Dear Member,
The following issues will be open for discussion at the July meeting, which will be held in Transport House on Friday 28th July at 11am. Please make every effort to attend.

Transneeds – An important break-through with the job agency Reeds & Co has given us a small number trainee placements. Our instructors at Boaler Street have now extended their facilities to cover Reach-Fork Training which will hopefully attract more work for the centre. Any member who is currently looking for work through their local job centres, should consider signing up with Reeds and then ask to be sent on a course at Transneeds.

Hope Street – The basic design for cellar area of the building has now been completed for the Bar/Bistro project, allowing us now to concentrate on the main bar/venue area of the first floor. Providing we can meet the next wave of expenditure for the final stages, a proposed opening date is now being planned for early October.

Messages of Solidarity – Have been sent to our Good Friends at Premier Brands, who are fighting against mass redundancies and the possible closure of one of Merseyside’s last and biggest unionised factories. We will always remember the help and support that the workers of Premier Brands gave to us, both during and after our 28-month dispute and have pledged to offer whatever help and assistance we can give.

CD Rom - The CD is nearing completion and should be available late August/ early September.

Dockers' DVD Pilot - The Initiative Factory in conjunction with Planet Wild, Parallax Pictures and The International Centre for Digital Content has been developing a pilot DVD of the Dockers Film and the Writing the Wrongs Documentary. The idea is to produce an educational product for Media, Sociology, History and Political departments. The DVD has given us the opportunity to add real depth to the subject of the dispute. Social Historian Eric Taplin provides a historical backdrop, interviews recorded by IF have added divergent viewpoints, stills by Dave Sinclair and different versions of the script are all included. A meeting has been scheduled for August 1st with Channel 4 with the aim of raising development money.

The next meeting will be held on Friday 8th September at Transport House 11.00am.

Conference paid a special tribute to that great internationalist Francisco Ramos Vargos, ("Paco") who was tragically killed whilst working in the Port of Tenerife last year. Delegates attended a special ceremony of family, friends and fellow dockworkers at the port. When Paco attended a meeting in Liverpool 1996 during the Liverpool Dockworkers lockout he spoke these words: " The unity of all dockworkers in the labour and trade union movement is one of my main aspirations. I wish that one day that old aspiration will become a reality."

Following the events that have now been concluded in Tenerife, that aspiration is becoming a reality.
