has the skills, capacity
and approach that enables us to offer a quality service handling
all cargoes; container, ro-ro, bulk, grain and general, as required.
Our
comprehensive database ensures a detailed skills profile capable
of undertaking all aspects of dock work.
We
offer a flexible and comprehensive service meeting customer demands
on plant, administration, insurance, protective clothing, health
and safety, clerical and supervisory services.
Initially,
LD&S will provide work for twenty full time employees who, although
now considered to be long term unemployed, have many years of experience
working in the Port of Liverpool with the marketable skills normally
associated with this demanding working environment.
LD&S
will primarily offer labour-only sub-contract services to local
industry and community partnership projects based on Merseyside.
Its main objective will be to pay a fair wage, whilst offering support
and training to its employees with the long term strategy of building
upon a customer base within the local transport, warehouse, and
distribution sector of the local economy.
Participants
will directly benefit from this opportunity to return to meaningful
employment that will involve assistance towards re-entering the
world of work including health and safety, equal opportunities and
other confidence enhancing training. Support will be given throughout
their employment and LD&S will work in conjunction with its considerable
partnership base in the community to maximize other training, learning,
employment opportunities.
LD&S
and its parent organisation, the Initiative Factory, are registered
as an Industrial and Provident Society. This community focused organisation
was established by the former Liverpool dock workers in January
1998 to provide training, re-skilling and employment opportunities
for this group. Whilst this primary group fits the criterion of
long term unemployed ( September 1995) it was recognised that the
Initiative Factory would always develop as a much wider based community
forum.
